Technology Redux: Revisiting Past, Reflecting Present, Provoking Future
Collaborating with Soobin Park, EunJeong Cheon, Youn-kyung Lim, and Hyungjun Cho, we introduce Technology Redux, a methodological approach in HCI that revisits past technological experiences to critically reflect on today’s technologies and provoke new visions for the future. Through our case study BeeperRedux—a recreation of the 1990s beeper as a smartphone app—we outline four key considerations: going beyond replication, balancing provocation with everyday integration, using personal narratives as research resources, and revealing sociocultural and infrastructural contexts. Technology Redux bridges historicist approaches, speculative design, and research products, offering a critical yet actionable research practice for HCI.
